This walk of breathtaking coastal scenery is on one of the most outstanding coastal walkways in New Zealand. Spectacular sea views, remote bays, pristine beaches, sea birds colonies, forest birds, pohutukawa forest and rich pre – European Maori history combine to make for a very interesting and magnificent walk. The walkway traverses a headland with many ancient Maori pa sites (villages), one of which is dated by archaeologists as being the oldest known Maori pa site in New Zealand. Some of the original earthworks of the many ancient Maori pa sites are to be seen and information boards explain the layout and history of the areas pre – European Maori settlement. Along the walkway cliff top lookouts offer panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean and the off - shore islands of Moutohora (Whale Island) an extinct volcano and Whakaari (White Island) New Zealand’s only active marine volcano.
